“The secret to productive goal setting is in establishing clearly defined goals, writing them down and then focusing on them several times a day with words, pictures and emotions as if we’ve already achieved them.” -Denis Waitley
Overcoming My Dark Night of the Soul
At the end of 2011, I went through a Dark Night of the Soul. Unbelievable circumstances had come into my life, and I was thrown into constant feelings of fear, anxiety, despair, and hopelessness. Sleep was elusive. I was lucky to get a few hours a night, if that. Eating solids was near impossible, so I would try to “sneak” some crushed or pureed solids into a drink. It was the most depressing and difficult time of my entire life.
But there was hope. There was possibility. And I held onto that hope and possibility with all my might. I knew what I wanted, though on any given day I was unsure how it could even be possible. That didn’t matter. I was clear about what I wanted. With that clarity, every day I visualized different potential positive outcomes to my situation. While visualizing, I allowed myself to feel the emotions I would feel if that specific outcome were to actually happen.
I would like to be able to say that everything I wanted happened overnight, but that wouldn’t be true. I planted the seeds, and the Universe had its own agenda. Fortunately, after 2 months of my Dark Night of the Soul, one of those visualizations came true exactly as I wished. And though I still had some fear because not everything had been resolved, much of my fear had dissipated. It was surreal and reminded me that there’s powers beyond my conscious mind that are conspiring on my behalf.
Or so I thought...
See, all of my remaining intentions were dependent upon that first one manifesting. I knew that as long as the first one happened, the other two were inevitable. I also believed some of them to be bound by space and time, such that they had to occur on a specific schedule. A few days after my first manifestation happened, the timing for my second one was coming to pass.
And it passed without happening. In fact, the outcome was so opposite of what I’d expected that it brought me back into fear. Not nearly as deep as the Darkest Night of my Soul, but it was clear that I still hadn’t emerged into the resolution of the morning light.
On the bright side (pardon the pun!), my third manifestation did come true. In fact, I was so impacted that the joy I felt far exceeded what I could have ever imagined.
Then a few weeks later, things got worse.
At this point, it would have been easy to give up. Still, I couldn’t deny that two out of my three intentions had already manifested in only a few months. And these weren’t small manifestations. These were life-changing intentions... intentions that would impact the course of multiple peoples’ lives forever.
And so I kept on trucking. I kept focusing. I held my intentions until the next scheduled date when something relevant could happen. When that day came, things were looking grim. It appeared that again, my intention wouldn’t manifest.
But then a miracle happened and everything came together. My intentions manifested and I literally started sobbing with joy and relief. I’d never experienced such an outpouring of emotions as I did on that day.
While that was the end of my Dark Night, there were still a few loose ends that the Universe needed to wrap up. Those took another few months before it all came together. Though my story makes it sound like things just happened “to” me, that’s because I’ve left out about 99% of the details in hopes of sharing my experience in as concise a way as possible.
Each and every day I was taking as many concrete actions as I could to maniffest my intentions. I was also doing the inner work, the visualizations, the affirmations, feeling my emotion, and anything I could to improve my mindset and heartset. In this way, I learned an invaluable lesson about what it takes to manifest my desires:
